I don't mean to be an idiot, but still being a little young in the whole VTES scene I thought I would ask for clarification on cards using text such as Combat Shotgun and Aid from Bats. Specifically I am curious as what the text actually means.
For instance, how can the combat shotgun be used more than one strike if it is only usable once each round? Can I blur with it or something? If I can literally only strike with the gun once and other cards like it (ie. Sawed Off Shotgun) then why even bother putting in the text "3R damage EACH strike?" My second example is a card like Aid from Bats. Do I get to maneuver with it as well as strike with it and if so when is the appropriate time to play such cards?
Thanks.
Combat Shotgun Type: Equipment Cost: 3 pool Weapon, Gun. 3R damage each strike, only usable once each round.
Rarity: Sabbat:C SW:C Third:C
Aid from Bats Type: Combat Requires: Animalism [ani] Strike: 1R damage, with an optional maneuver. [ANI] As above, with an optional press.

You can only use it to strike once in a round, if you gain an additional strike and have already used it, then the adds must be from another source. The "each strike" is so that is is clear how much damage it deals.

If were to use the maneuver, then you are committed to the text coming before it, so like a .44, the maneuver is used during the range phase of combat.

I've never been terribly clear on why they felt the need to put the 'each strike' bit on the shotguns. Perhaps it's some sort of reminder? You definitely can't use it (again) in an additional strike.

Aid from Bats (and Thrown Gate) work like .44's. That is, you can use them to maneuver (in the maneuver phase), but if you do so, you are committed to striking with them in the strike phase. Which means that you can end up with no strike at all if, say, you get Immorally Grabbled. (As you have already committed to a non-hand-strike strike, which is not allowed under IG.)

You can't use it more than once per round, but you can use it multiple times per combat, as the combat presses to 2nd, 3rd etc rounds. And each time you strike with it, you do 3R.

Let's say the opponent played a maneuver, so you didn't use the maneuver part of Aid from Bats. Then, you play it at ANI, so you press to a second round. You no longer have that maneuver. Most effects last only the round in which the card is played, unless there is explicit text making it last all combat (Carrion Crows), or something else (Trap).

So I can use Aid from Bats as a maneuver and then must strike with it and at superior of course I will have a press...... and unless someone goes back to close with a maneuver no Immortal Grapple....... cool beans

to make it clear it's not going to just go and do it's damage whenever it feels like it. as an action, before range, as environmental damage...? No. it does it's damage each STRIKE. and not at any other time.
It might possibly be re-written as:
Strike: 3R, only usable once per (round or combat, depending on which shotgun you're talking about).
But it needs the word strike in there to make the card meaningful.
