M,

I too have an x50v that I have upgraded to Windows Mobile 5. I too have
experienced some issues and some of the issues you have brought up are known
issues that Dell will be addressing. Those issues include the rapid battery
drain if you have SD or CF card in the device and Microsof has done a pretty
good job with ActiveSync 4.1. Dell will also be addressing the WiFi and
bluetooth stacks as well if the rumor mill is right.

That said, clearly you are having a lot more issues than the norm. When I
first did my upgrade, it went horrible as well and I ended up rolling back
to WM2003SE. When I tried it again, I did a hard reset and removed all of
the storage cards. I then cradle the unit and did the upgrade. I highly
recommend that you keep the device cradled the entire time you are
upgrading. It seems that going to battery power (when you are told to reset
the device) doesn't do it any favors.

The initial sync of the device in WM5 is slow but has been significantly
improved in 4.1. Still, remember that you are writing to the ROM now
instead of RAM - it's slower than RAM. Once that initial sync is done
though, you should see a better performance.

In an editorial I wrote last week I stated that the problems are there but
there is a lot to like about the new OS. With Dell expected to release a
new ROM image soon, I wouldn't give up on it just yet but I would suggest
making starting all over as I outlined above. You can find that editorial
on my website BTW.

Hope this helps,
