Paksa: List Windows Mobile v5.0 Problems and ActiveSync 4.1 Problems Here
Can I suggest using this thread as a posting for all Windows Mobile
v5.0 problems and ActiveSync 4.1 problems.

I've just joined this forum after upgrading from 2003SE to Mobile
v5.0 for Axim X50v on the Dell Axim X50v. This software release is a
disaster. How can this have happened, where is beta testing, regression
testing, acceptance testing? It's apparent from the Dell and HP forums
that problems are common-place.

These are the problems Im experiencing, which appear to be typical.

Speed
           -     General performance - is unbeleivably ponderous in
response to the simplest actions (like I click on "Ok", or ask for the
"Menu"). What has happened to my Axim X50v running at 624Mhz!!!?. The
machine is very pre-occupied with something since the upgrade - (and it
isn't me, or the job in hand!)
           -     Synchronisation - is painfully slow. I've been
synchronising over USB (first time synch) for 75 mins - YES SEVENTY
FIVE - it's just finished.
           -         Soft-reset: it now takes a full 45 seconds from
soft-reset to use. What is it doing?

Battery life - the battery runs down at an incredible rate after the
upgrade

Bugs
-         Crashes - (eg 'error detected in device.exe')
-         WiFi - sometimes runs of its own accord after a soft-reset,
but the wireless driver thinks it isn't running (so I cant turn it
off!)
-         Reset - Black screen with vertical lines sometimes after a
soft-reset
-         Email accounts - I setup up a new Email account in the
email client and it disappeared after I'd been using it for a day. This
isn't friendly!
-         Synchronisation - the connection drops.

What have I tried? Ive removed all programs on the Axim x50v through
Active Sync 4.1, uninstalled all Pocket PC software from the partnered
Desktop PC, uninstalled Active Sync, hard-reset the Axim X50v and
started from a clean slate, re-installing ActiveSync4.1 without any
additional software. No difference. Im stuck with this until either
Dell fix it in a future service release or I retro-install 2003SE.

How and when are these problems going to get fixed?

Yeah, I'll also add that Money 2005 just doesn't work with Windows
Mobile 5 (I believe it's an issue with the database Money uses on the
device). I'd have thought that Microsoft would have done something
about this with Money 2006 but no, still broken... jas

While the activesync forum is the appropriate place for activesync
questions and problems, this section is the appropriate place for most
other WM5 posts.

In addition to that, the hallmark of the entire public.pocketpc forum is
tolerance... everyone should feel free to post even if they are unable
to find the appropriate forum... in most cases, the questions will be
answered along with a reference to the appropriate forum.

At this point, the release of 4.0 and 4.1 are major developments that
impact everyone new to pocketpc's who are purchasing current (wm5)
devices, so they are the ones that need all the help they can get.

Finally, most readers will allow you to create a filter to deal with all
posts that have activesync, 4.0 or 4.1 in the subject line.

Paksa: Re: List Windows Mobile v5.0 Problems and ActiveSync 4.1 Problems Here
M,

I too have an x50v that I have upgraded to Windows Mobile 5.  I too have
experienced some issues and some of the issues you have brought up are known
issues that Dell will be addressing.  Those issues include the rapid battery
drain if you have SD or CF card in the device and Microsof has done a pretty
good job with ActiveSync 4.1.  Dell will also be addressing the WiFi and
bluetooth stacks as well if the rumor mill is right.

That said, clearly you are having a lot more issues than the norm.  When I
first did my upgrade, it went horrible as well and I ended up rolling back
to WM2003SE.  When I tried it again, I did a hard reset and removed all of
the storage cards.  I then cradle the unit and did the upgrade.  I highly
recommend that you keep the device cradled the entire time you are
upgrading.  It seems that going to battery power (when you are told to reset
the device) doesn't do it any favors.

The initial sync of the device in WM5 is slow but has been significantly
improved in 4.1.  Still, remember that you are writing to the ROM now
instead of RAM - it's slower than RAM.  Once that initial sync is done
though, you should see a better performance.

In an editorial I wrote last week I stated that the problems are there but
there is a lot to like about the new OS.  With Dell expected to release a
new ROM image soon, I wouldn't give up on it just yet but I would suggest
making starting all over as I outlined above.  You can find that editorial
on my website BTW.

Hope this helps,

Paksa: Re: List Windows Mobile v5.0 Problems and ActiveSync 4.1 Problems Here
Hi Clinton,
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated, and Ive just checked out your
editorial for good measure :-) Im seriously thinking of retrograding
and trying again. A couple of things worry me though:

1. Can I continue to use ActiveSync 4.1 during the retrograde to 2003SE
and re-upgrade to Mobile v5.0? I seem to recall documented glitches
between ActiveSync 4.1 and Mobile v5.0?
2. Dell say "After completing the system ROM reinstallation, there is a
possibility new features of Windows Mobile 5.0 may be disabled". What
does this mean? Surely not that when I re-upgrade to v5.0, some
features may not work?!

The two hints you've suggested (disabling error reporting and safe mode
functionality) - is this during the upgrade, or once Mobile 5.0 is
installed? Presumably I should remove my SD for the duration of the
retrograde and re-upgrade.

Thanks for your advice
Rgds

I am not sure about your first question as I have not had to roll back
to WM2003 myself.  As for the second point, it is probably more of a
catchall legal comment.  I have been able to do all of the things with
my upgraded x50v I did before the upgrade.

One thing you REALLY have to do is make a couple changes to the Axim
x50v after doing the upgrade.  I posted this how-to...

http://smartmobileassets.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b=winmobile,m=11324...

...and many have tried it and noticed a big difference in the
performance.  I noticed that it is MUCH snappier.

I also posted a how-to on being able to use true VGA on a WM5 device.

http://smartmobileassets.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b=winmobile,m=11326...

I'm doing this with my x50v as well and it works quite well.  For web
browsing it is soooo much nicer to have true VGA.

Hope that helps after you switch back to WM5.

M,

Darren hit most of the points on his reply.  Yes, you can continue to use
4.1 with WM2003SE.  You will not have some of the features (such as media
sync) with WM2003 as you do with WM5 but it will work.

Yes, you can remove the cards.  I would recommend it in fact.

Thanks for visiting the site!
